Meet this species
Painted anemones are colourful predators of rocky marine habitats. Their tentacles capture small animals and food particles, while the muscular column keeps the animal firmly attached to the substrate. Nine observations across 2022 and 2023 make this one of the more frequently documented underwater species in the Greene Point record.

What to look for:
Look for a stout anemone with a broad oral disc surrounded by dense tentacles. Painted anemones can display vivid reds, pinks and oranges, often with contrasting bands or markings that make individuals especially striking underwater.
Why It Matters Here:
Repeated painted anemone observations help show that the submerged landscape is not empty rock. It is densely occupied habitat where predators, suspension feeders, grazers and other organisms live packed across the available surfaces.
